Materials Science - Summer Internship Positions

Job Description

This position at Cummins involves utilizing materials science and engineering principles to analyze and develop optimized solutions for various systems, including IC engines, electric power systems, fuel and air systems, aftertreatment systems, and battery and fuel cell electric systems.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Analytical Chemistry, or related field
• Knowledge of material and process selection, failure analysis, chemical and microstructural characterization
• Experience with surface engineering, component evaluation, and manufacturing processes
• Familiarity with spectroscopy methods, microstructural evaluation, mechanical property measurements, and non-destructive inspection methods
• Ability to collaborate cross-functionally and communicate analysis results effectively

Responsibilities

• Utilize knowledge of materials science and engineering principles to advance solutions for design, manufacturing, and quality goals
• Work on projects requiring materials and fluids guidance, such as material selection, failure analysis, and chemical metrology
• Optimize performance of components or fluids within systems by understanding relationships between structure, composition, and processing
• Apply principles of surface engineering to manipulate wear, strength, and corrosion resistance of components
• Evaluate component requirements to identify base material and processing options
• Supervised execution using understanding of Physics and Chemistry to recommend appropriate actions for problem resolution
• Collaborate with stakeholders and colleagues to support project advancement
