Job Description

Project Kuiper is an initiative to provide broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities worldwide through a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites. The Senior Optical Engineer will lead the design of optical systems for ground and space applications.

Requirements

• Masters's Degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Electronics, or related discipline, or equivalent experience
• 8+ years of experience in optical systems development across full product life cycles
• Experience defining opto-mechanical requirements and architectures
• Experience with lasers, detectors, modulators, optical fiber and devices, testing and characterization
• Experience with optical metrology for component and system test and qualification
• Experience with physical and geometric optics, Gaussian beam propagation and detection
• Experience building custom optical systems and test setups

Responsibilities

• Lead optical and opto-mechanical design of ground and space based optical systems
• Lead and support the development of optical setups for assembly, integration, and test of optical systems
• Drive continuous design improvement of the payload optical systems, assembly setups, and test setups
• Lead prototype builds of the optical sub-systems
• Support transition of design and assembly processes to AI&T and manufacturing
• Facilitate training of optical and opto-mechanical technicians and support engineers
